Getting Started in Dagger Directive

Leave the ship with a plan, not a sprint and a reset.

Getting Started

Dagger Directive is already a finished Steam release. Version 1.0 landed on 13 August 2026, so you are not waiting on a core loop — you are learning a loop that punishes impatience. You are an operator in Task Force Dagger. You pick a mission, pick a time of day, walk an armory that does not hide guns behind levels, and then you live or die by one bullet.

This page is the first-hour order. It does not replace Controls or Stealth. It tells you what to touch before those pages matter.

Finish the ship before the helicopter

The tutorial is longer than a modern shooter briefing and shorter than it needs to be. Sit through the ranges. Learn how pouches open (default number row, plus Shift plus 1–6 on newer binds). Learn that aiming while moving is slower and quieter than a hip sprint. Learn that the mission board is where official ops and Workshop ops both live after 1.0.

Skip the tutorial and you will discover those facts on a snow ridge with a patrol behind you. The video below is a long look at that first-mission texture: loadout shelves, drone pouches, and why a failed op is normal.

Build a kit like you already know the map

There is no unlock treadmill. That is the feature people quote and the trap they fall into. A SAW plus an M203 is legal on mission one. It is also a loud confession. For the first real op, pack:

  • A suppressed short rifle or SMG
  • A pistol you will actually draw
  • A recon drone if you have the pouch space
  • NVGs if you chose night
  • Two smokes and at least one lethal you understand

Use the loadout planner if you want a role card, or skim Role builds for ghost versus breacher kits. Do not invent a meme loadout until you have extracted once.

Pick a small first mission, not a tour

Campaigns span the Bering Sea, the South Pacific, Eastern Europe, and the 1.0 Global Ops branch. Your first op should be a map with a short objective list and a clear ridge or treeline. Open the mission planner, choose day and silent, and write down one entry and one exit. The Walkthrough page briefs each theater without pretending there is a single golden path.

Time of day is a loadout decision. Day gives you glass and glare. Night gives you NVGs and a darker AI, plus flashlights that will still ruin you. The store copy is not joking: if you go in after dark, pack the goggles.

Save like a coward, move like a ghost

The game is one-shot lethal and save-anywhere. Those two facts belong together. Save on the ramp. Save after the first patrol. Save before you peek a compound. If you are in online co-op, say the save out loud so the squad does not wander into a host-only checkpoint. Co-op covers the rest of that etiquette.

Movement is the other half. Keyboard default is top speed. Top speed is heard. Hold walk, crouch, go prone in grass, or move while aiming. The Stealth page is the long version. The short version is: if you are jogging, you are already spotted.

Learn two tools before you get clever

Zeroing. Plus and minus on the scope, old Delta Force muscle memory. Lase first if you have a rangefinder. Ballistics explains drop, lead, and the OICW airburst offset so you stop guessing at 300 metres.

Drones. Recon first, explosive second. Range is limited to 500 metres with a 200-metre ceiling. AI can see and shoot them. Drones is the field manual. Do not spend your first hour trying to clear a base with only explosive drones unless you are doing it on purpose.

After the first extract

If you lived, do not immediately raise the difficulty and grab a belt-fed. Run the same map at night. Then run it loud with a kit from Weapon ranks. Then invite a friend and treat Co-op as a systems test, not a victory lap. When you want community maps, Workshop is the subscribe-and-board flow.

If you bounced off the art or the lethality, read the Review before you refund on a first-death mood. The game is ugly on purpose and mean on purpose. The question is whether you want that, not whether the header screenshot looks like a 2026 cover shooter.

Come back to this page only when a patch moves the tutorial. For everything else, the sibling guides are the deeper brief.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Dagger Directive still Early Access?

No. Version 1.0 released on 13 August 2026. This guide assumes the finished Steam build.

Do I need to unlock weapons?

No. The armory is open from the start. The limit is pouch space and judgement, not XP.

Should I play the first mission at night?

Only if you packed NVGs and already understand walk-not-sprint. Day plus silent is the kinder first op.

Can I play the first missions in co-op?

Yes. Online co-op supports up to four. Finish one solo extract first so you know the save and pouch habits.
